Pickering 30, Blessed Trinity (SOSSA) 27
The Pickering Trojans became the
second LOSSA based school to capture the Ontario Regional Junior Championship as
they edged by the Blessed Trinity Thunder 30-27 in a tightly contested
championship game played at St. Michael's College.
Playing four down football in the opening half, the Trojans put together a 12
play drive spanning six and a half minutes however they were stopped without a
point by the Blessed Trinity defense who forced a Trojan turnover on downs at
the eleven yard line. Unable to move the ball, Blessed Trinity elected to
have their punter concede a two point safety credited to Kyeree Reynolds.
The margin became nine when the ensuing kick off was returned 73 yards by
Justice Johnson, who added the convert.
Early in the second quarter, the Thunder punted and quickly pounced on a fumble
in the Pickering red zone at the 14 yard line. Coupled with an unnecessary
roughness penalty on the play, the ball was placed on the one yard line.
Trinity's semi-final game MVP, Austin Whetton immediately took the ball to the
house and the point after by Luke Consiglio cut the margin to two. Ninety
seconds later, Trojan quarterback Jaylen Latouche, dropped back to pass, was hit
in the backfield, and fumbled the ball. This gave the Thunder first down
at the Pickering 26. This turnover led to a 14 yard run by Bryce Kiefer
giving the Grimsby based school their first lead of the game. Consiglio's
point after made the score 14-9. Apparently stalled at their own 49,
Pickering faked a punt and Kesean Bennett attempted to sweep left. He
found a wall of Thunder players poised to bring him down well short of the first
down marker and he alertly pitched the ball to kicker Tarrick Brissant who
rambled 61 yards for a Trojan touchdown. Johnson added his second convert
of the match to put the Trojans on top 16-14 with less than two minutes to the
half. Undeterred, Blessed Trinity responded with Noah Lane hooking up with
Theo Schut for a 56 yard pass and run with 37 ticks on the clock.
Consiglio picked up his third convert of the quarter and the Thunder retook the
lead 21-16. Trinity then managed to recover the kickoff, Pickering's
fourth turnover of the opening half, at the 39 yard line. They quickly
moved the ball and the Trojans were able to escape when Keyshaun Cumberbatch
brought Whetton to the turf inside the ten yard line as the first half ended.
The second half saw the two schools playing three down football ..The Trojans
recovered a Thunder fumble on the kickoff, gaining possession at the Thunder 35,
but they were unable to move the ball as the defense shut them down.
Gambling on third down, they turned the ball over. Trinity was unable to
move the ball and punted. With just over seven minutes remaining in the
third quarter Latouche connected with Johnson for a 43 yard pass inside the
Thunder 15 yard line. A horse collar call on the play saw the ball
advanced to the one yard line where Darnel Jarrett would carry the ball in for
the major. With a one point lead, Pickering went for a two point convert
however the attempt failed when Latouche was sacked before he could release the
ball. Blessed Trinity responded with a solid drive using their fierce
ground attack tandem of Whetton, Kiefer and Benny Ferrara. Ferrera, the
heavyweight of the three pronged attack eventually bulldozed his way to the end
zone with 1:19 remaining in the third stanza. A bad snap led to a failed convert
and the Thunder led 27-22. At this point, the Thunder kick off team made
the mistake of kicking the ball to Johnson. As was the case in the opening
quarter Johnson broke through the Thunder tacklers and was heading uncontested
to the end zone when he decided to back peddle in from the five yard line.
Flags flew everywhere and instead of the Trojans regaining the lead, the
objectionable conduct call saw them backed up to the Thunder 20. They were
able to move the ball with Jarrett breaking lose for a big gain which set up
Bennett for a one yard plunge. Once again, the Trojans went for a two
point convert and the convert was good as a pass was completed to Johnson making
the score 30-27.
The fourth quarter saw the teams exchange possessions with neither team able to
generate points. With about six minutes left, the Thunder put together a
sustained drive with the highlight being a nice pass reception by Thomas Barker.
The Thunder marched the ball to the Pickering 16 yard line. With Lane
throwing, his pass was deflected off a Thunder receiver and intercepted by
Cumberbatch giving the Trojans possession at their own 13 with just under six
minutes remaining. A few plays later, Pickering once again went with the
fake punt well inside their side of the field and Bennett carried the ball 49
yards. A 36 yard touchdown run by Jarrett was called back on an illegal
procedure call and the margin remained at three as the Thunder took posession at
their 18 yard line. Lane, having to work his offense without Whitten
(forced out of the game with an arm/shoulder injury midway through the fourth
quarter), would connect with Leslie Brown for a 24 yard gain and a first down
however the Thunder would lose possession on downs three plays later when Brown
was unable to pick up first down yardage on a third down gamble. Using
time outs, the Thunder defense forced Pickering to punt again and they had one
last chance starting at their 30 yard line with 38 seconds on the clock.
On third down, Lane would move the sticks as he carried the ball 12 yards before
going out of bounds. Lane then connected with Kieffer on a 24 yard pass
and run with one second remaining. Facing a field goal attempt of over 50
yards, the Thunder went for the long pass. Intended for a well covered
Barker, the pass was incomplete as the game ended.
Post game MVP awards were given to Kesean Bennett and Benny Ferrara.

Semi-final
Saturday, November 24th
Pickering 42, Ashbury College (CISAA) 12
The Pickering Trojans have
advanced to the Ontario Regional Junior football championship following a 42-14
win over Ashbury College (Ottawa) on Saturday at St. Michael's College. Although
the final margin was 28 points, the Colts gave the Trojans a great battle behind
the stellar passing of quarterback Jake Hamm.
The Colts would open the game with an eight minute and thirty second drive which
resulted in Hamm keeping the ball and scoring from one yard out. Sascha
Jammes added a two point convert on the following play. The Trojans,
gambling on fourth down, gave the ball to Darnell Jarrett who swept around the
outside for a 40 yard gain. They immediately followed that play with a 20
yard run by Keyshaun Cumberbatch for a touchdown. Justice Johnson
added the convert as Pickering reduced the deficit to one. The second
quarter was headlined by Darnell Jarrett, who was onside when Pickering punted
and was able to recover that punt at midfield allowing the Trojans to maintain
possession. Three minutes later, Pickering
picked up a big break when a Colt punt
returner had difficulty fielding the ball at the goal line. As he finally
started to control the ball, he was hit hard by Jarrett, who then alertly fell
on the ball in the end zone to put the Trojans ahead 13-8. Ashbury
responded with a long drive highlighted by a long pass and run to Sascha James
who carried the ball to the eleven yard line before finally being tackled.
Shortly thereafter, Hamm completed a nine yard touchdown
strike to Viktor Lorenzen. The point after attempt failed and the teams
reached the half with Ashbury holding a narrow 14-13 lead.
Pickering would retake the lead at the midpoint of the third quarter as Jarrett
took the ball to the house from two yards out. Once again the Colts
battled back and appeared to have the Trojan secondary beat at Hamm delivered a
long pass to Tommy Friedlich, who was unable to hold on to the ball.
In the opening minute of the final quarter Kesean Bennett increased the lead to
27-14 as he scored from one yard out. With just under eight minutes
remaining, Hamm appeared to suffer an injury to his throwing hand and was moved
to running back. The injury obviously affected the Ashbury passing game
from that point onward. The Colts appeared to tire in the
final quarter as Pickering delivered a couple of big plays, including a 93 yard
screen pass to Kesean Bennett, who probably ran 150 yards before finally being
brought down at the Ashbury two yard line. Jarrett, on the next play from
scrimmage, and Johnson closed out the scoring.
Game MVP awards went to Darnel Jarrett and Jake Hamm.
Pickering advances to the tournament final for the first time since 1997.
Their opponent will be Blessed Trinity (Grimsby), who defeated Notre Dame
(Burlington) 34-20 in the game preceding the Trojan-Colt match..

Pickering 34, Assumption College (Brant County) 31 (Overtime)
Pickering and Assumption College
(the 2011 champions) met in opening round play for the Ontario Regional Junior
Football Championship at Civic Field in Oshawa.
The Trojans took an early 7-0 lead when they took advantage of an Assumption
fumble. The short drive ended with a 10 yard touchdown pass reception by
Justice Johnson, who also picked up the point after. Undeterred,
Assumption recovered a Pickering fumble and marched the ball from midfield to
pull even at seven in the second quarter. Kavin Cann picked up the seven
points with a 38 yard scamper as well as the convert.
The teams would then trade touchdowns prior to the half. First, it was
Darnell Jarrett unleashing a 19 yard run, which was countered by Logan Homer's
24 yard carry on a well executed double reverse.
The Trojans took the lead for the third time in the third quarter when Jarrett
took a screen pass 74 yards to the house. Once again, the Lions roared
back as Luke Saunders, on a keeper, completed an impressive nine and a half
minute drive when he scored from the one yard line to level the game at 21
through three quarters of play.
With just over four minutes remaining, Assumption was able to take the lead for
the first time as Cann carried the ball in from the seventeen yardline.
His fourth convert of the game put Assumption on top by seven.
Now with the ball and the clock ticking down, the Trojans were fortunate to
escape a fourth and long situation as Jaylan Latouche, under extreme pressure,
completed a 30 yard desperation pass to Johnson. Three plays later,
Latouche found Johnson for a 24 yard passing major with 1:23 remaining.
Trailing by one, the Trojans lined up for the game tying point after attempt.
The snap to the holder, Latouche, was a little high and he decided to pass for
two points and the lead. He was immediately met by a pride of Lions and
brought down to the turf.
With the crowd now anticipating an onside kick off attempt, Tarrick Brissett
sailed the ball seventy-five yards into the end zone and the Lions were trapped
behind the goal line giving the Trojans the single point rouge and setting up
overtime.
The Lions had first possession in overtime starting at the 35 yard line.
They picked up a first down at the 21, however three plays later facing fourth
and eight, they called upon Cann to deliver a 25 field goal. The three
pointer upped his personal point total for the day to 19.
Also starting from the 35, two first downs later, Pickering would find
themselves with a first and goal from the ten. They then called upon
Jarrett, who carried the ball to the end zone to give the Trojans the overtime
victory.

Pickering 19, Holy Trinity 18
The Pickering Trojans and Holy
Trinity Titans were meeting for the third time this season and given the fact
that the two previous games had seen one point differences in the final quarter,
one should not have been surprised when the teams were once again engaged in a
one point game through the final twelve minutes of play. The Titans had
opened up a 12-0 lead on a first quarter touchdown run by league MVP Nathan
Jones (32 yards) and a second quarter fumble recovery in the end zone by Mikey
Akeson following a Trinity punt. Thirty-seven seconds following Akeson's
touchdown, Darnel Jarrett unleashed a 51 yard run to cut the lead in half .
The first half concluded with Justice Johnson being forced out of bounds at the
Titans two yard line. Following intermission, Johnson returned the second
half kick off 65 yards to knot the score at twelve. His convert gave
the Trojans their first lead of the game. Trinity responded with a
touchdown by Nathan Jones, his second, from the two yards out with just over
three minutes remaining in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later,
the Trojans recaptured the lead on a 26 yard run by Kesean Bennett.
Bennett's run was set up by a 29 yard carry by Jarrett. The fourth quarter saw
the teams exchange possessions until the Titans started their third long drive
of the game and moved the ball deep into Pickering territory. With 29
seconds on the clock, the Titans were inside the Trojan 15 yard line, Coach
Lyons called for a game winning field goal attempt. The attempt was
blocked and the Junior Trojans narrowly escaped with their record tenth LOSSA
football title.
The victory earns the Trojans a berth in the Ontario Regional Junior Football
Championship. They are scheduled to host Assumption College School
(Brantford) in quarter-final play. The game is tentatively scheduled for
Friday, November 16th at 12:00 p.m.. Location will either be Pickering
High School or Oshawa Civic Field.
