Metro Bowl

Semi-final

Wednesday, November 21st

Huron Heights (YRAA) 40, Donald A. Wilson 3
The Huron Heights Warriors will be making their third trip to the Metro Bowl at the Rogers Centre on Tuesday, November 27th as they exploded for three touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half en route to a 40-3 victory over Donald A. Wilson.  The loss ended the Gators quest to be the first LOSSA based school to capture back to back Metro Bowl championships.
Until the Warrior outburst, the two teams had been locked in a defensive battle with the Gators holding a slender 3-0 advantage thanks to a first quarter 25 yard field goal by Christian Rose.  The play that broke the game open was a pass down the middle to a wide open Kyle Lasota, who could have walked into the end zone from ten yards out.  Immediately following the ensuing kickoff, an errant pass by George Papadakos was intercepted by the Warriors middle linebacker, Troy Adams, who gave the Warriors possession inside the Gator 25 yard line.  The Gator defense, appearing to be unsettled by the touchdown pass., was unable to contain the Warrior ground game and three plays later the Warriors had upped the lead to 13-3 as Derek Pisani reached the house for the first of his three touchdown runs.  The Gators quickly went two and out starting from their own 23 yard line.  A seven yard punt gave the Warriors possession on the thirty yard line and Huron Heights quarterback Kaleb Scott immediately connected with Cody Murrell for a completion at the three yard line.  Three plays later Pisani carried the ball into the end zone to give the Warriors a 19-3 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, it appeared that the Gators had cut the deficit to ten when Papadakos teamed up with Rose on a 76 yard pass and run.  However, an illegal block was called on the Gators and instead of the score being 19-9, the Gators found themselves back on their own 27 yard line.  Two plays later, the  Gators were forced to punt and the Warriors would march 63 yards with Lasota picking up his second receiving touchdown of the day to all but end the Gators hopes for a comeback.  The final quarter saw two more Warrior touchdowns, one by Scott and one by Pisani.
The Warriors will now meet the Don Bosco Eagles for the Metro Bowl Championship, who defeated St. Andrew's College 27-11.  Both schools are seeking their first Bowl title.
For three Gator players; CJ Stephens, Brandon Hatzes and Christian Rose, the game brings to an end their five year high school football career.  They leave with three LOSSA championships: two at Senior and one at Junior as well as a Metro Bowl championship.

Championship

Saturday, November 10th

Donald A. Wilson 42, Holy Trinity 20
Each year, the LOSSA football coaches are asked to submit their nominations for the league's Most Valuable Player at the end of the regular season.  The presentation is then usually made following the conclusion of the league final.  The fans in attendance at this years championship will not be disputing the coaches selection for 2012 Tier I.  The award went to Andrew Smith of the Donald A. Wilson Gators.  Smith's effort was amongst the best all time in a league final.  All he did was score each of the five Wilson offensive touchdowns.  He played a big role in the sixth touchdown, a pass interception returned by Christian Rose, as he delivered the key block on the play.  Late in the fourth quarter with the game decided, he added an interception to his game stats.
The Titans found themselves in a deep hole early as they trailed by 21 before the game was eight minutes old. The Gators took advantage on two Titan turnovers (a loss on downs and the Rose interception).  To their credit, the 2010 Metro Bowl Champions fought back and reduced the lead to seven on a pair of touchdown runs by Blair Winner in the second quarter.  Sandwiched between the Titan touchdowns was a key fumble turnover by the Gators on the Holy Trinity one yard line.  The seven point deficit however would be as close as the Titans would get as Smith scored in the final minute of the first half to up the margin to fourteen.  From that point, the Titans would score six additional points on a pair of field goals by Joe Mastromarco (38 and 17 yards) however both times the Gators responded with a Smith touchdown.  Christian Rose successfully converted all six touchdowns while Mastromarco delivered the point after on both Titan majors.
The title for the Gators was their fifth in the past six seasons, a remarkable accomplishment for a school which was only opened in 2004.  Holy Trinity who entered the league in the same year as Wilson has now reached four Tier I Senior finals in the past five seasons.  The Gators will now attempt to defend their 2011Metro Bowl title and extend LOSSA's Metro Bowl title streak to three.  Their semi-final opponents will be Huron Heights (York Region) on Wednesday, November 21st at Centennial Stadium in Toronto.
